There are many different varieties of saltwater fishing tackle, so depending on where you are fishing, and what you are fishing for will determine the type of bait and tackle that you will need. For instance you will need a different rod and reel set up for bridge or pier fishing then you would if you were out on a boat in the ocean fishing for something like sailfish or Mahi Mahi.
If you have never fished before I would recommend starting off at a dock. This is very simple and can be very effective, all you will have to have is the right bait and saltwater fishing tackle to get the job done. So if I were a beginner fisherman I would start off with a spin casting fishing reel, as they are the cheapest type of fishing reel but they can be very effective when fishing for smaller species of fish from a dock. I would also get a pre setup rod and reel, this will more than likely assure you that the rod and the reel balance out well together, until you get more familiar with setting up fishing rods this is the way to go. You can get some cheap spinning reels and spin casting reels from many places on the internet. Next you will need some fishing line you should start off with what the fishing reel can handle, I would recommend about 8 pound test for a beginner fishing off of a dock.
If you were out fishing from a pier you will need a much stronger rod and reel, along with a lot heavier pound test line. Think about it in most cases you will not only fight bigger fish from a pier than you would from a dock but also you might have to lift the fish up out of the water. But there is an alternative to this and this is a fish net that is desigmed to lower down into the water and lift the fish out of the water. This is very useful as you do not want the line breaking when you are ligting the fish out of the water, better yet you do not want the fish shaking the hook out of its mouth when you are trying to bring it up, as most species of fish get more fiesty when they are out of the water
When you are choosing tackle for your setup make sure that you are using the right sized hook for the right sized fish that you are trying to catch. Fishing hooks are numbered from 1 and up, and also below size one for small bait fish. A fishing hook with the number one is big enough to catch a small pinfish or something similar, as a size 10 fishing hook is big enough to catch a small shark.
